Press Release: Statement by IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn on the Death of William Dale
April 19, 2011
Mr. Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement today after learning of the death on April 16, 2011 of Mr. William Dale, who served at the IMF as Executive Director for the United States from 1962 to 1974 and then Deputy Managing Director from 1974 to 1984:
“I was sorry to learn of the passing of Bill Dale, who played very important roles in the IMF for more than two decades, and made a significant contribution to establishing the Fund’s reputation as an international institution.
“During his time at the IMF, the Fund had only one Deputy Managing Director, so Bill had a challenging job that included all of the responsibilities that we now divide among three people.
“When the Latin American debt crisis struck in 1982, his long experience of working with the indebted countries enabled him to negotiate solutions that served both the IMF and the world financial system well.
“Bill Dale, who was deeply appreciated by the IMF staff during his tenure as Deputy Managing Director, will be remembered fondly at the Fund as a highly respected leader and colleague.”
