News Brief: IMF Executive Board Adopts Resolution of Appreciation For Stanley Fischer

August 30, 2001


    Today the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) met to bid farewell to Stanley Fischer, First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF since 1994, and adopted the following Resolution of Appreciation:

    "WHEREAS on August 31, 2001, Mr. Stanley Fischer will relinquish the post of First Deputy Managing Director that he has held since its inception in September 1994, marking an eminent record of service to the International Monetary Fund;

    "WHEREAS from February 15 to April 30, 2000, Mr. Fischer served the IMF as the Acting Managing Director with distinction;

    "WHEREAS Mr. Fischer has shown a deep commitment to the mission of the IMF and the well-being of its 183 members;

    "WHEREAS Mr. Fischer has worked tirelessly, passionately, and with unparalleled energy to assist countries facing financial crises while promoting cooperation among members and stability in the global financial system;

    "WHEREAS Mr. Fischer has played a pivotal role in engaging the IMF in dialogue with both the official community and the private sector and civil society, thereby promoting greater transparency and accountability for the IMF as well as its members;

    "WHEREAS Mr. Fischer is widely admired as a towering force in the IMF for intellectual rigor, dynamism, and openness; and

    "WHEREAS Mr. Fischer is held in warm affection by colleagues in the IMF Executive Board, Management, and staff;

    "NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED: That the members of the Executive Board express to Mr. Fischer their deepest appreciation for his outstanding service to the IMF; their heartfelt regret at his leaving; and their best wishes to him and his family in all their future activities."
