This workshop is designed for technical-level staff in ministries of finance, national statistics agencies, or other relevant line ministries who seek to deepen their understanding of distributional dynamics in macroeconomic contexts. Participants will engage in frequent small group discussions, hands-on activities, and present their own analyses or case studies to foster in-depth learning and collaboration. Participants should be comfortable presenting examples of both success stories and challenges on key issues related to distributional issues and women's economic participation in their home countries to support interactive peer learning and knowledge sharing.
This workshop is designed to provide participants with actionable tools for integrating distributional considerations and women's economic participation into macroeconomic policy. Emphasizing practical application, the agenda covers analytical methods, micro-level data, financial inclusion, and fiscal policy (including gender budgeting)-key strategies for reducing inequality and enhancing economic performance. Participants will investigate how macrocritical disparities in areas such as labor markets, education, and financial access influence growth, productivity, and fiscal outcomes. Additionally, the workshop will demonstrate how gender budgeting links distributional analysis with fiscal decision-making, offering governments a practical framework for budget design.
Central to the workshop are hands-on sessions using practical tools and user-friendly dashboards and publicly available macro- and micro-level data (such as household, labor force, and time use surveys). The agenda focuses on policy applications in the sub-Saharan Africa region; moreover, participants will have opportunities to present their own research or country experiences, promoting collaborative learning and exchange. At the conclusion of the course, teams will offer short presentations, drawing upon the tools and materials presented in the workshop, to showcase country-specific quantitative analysis on the macroeconomic impacts of women's economic participation and policy solutions to close these gaps.
By the end of this five-day in-person workshop, participants will be able to:
