Statement by IMF African Department Director Abebe Aemro Selassie on Meeting with John Magufuli, President of the United Republic of Tanzania

Mr. Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) African Department, met yesterday with Tanzania’s President John Magufuli in Dar es Salam. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Selassie issued the following statement:

“President Magufuli and I had constructive discussions on Tanzania’s economic prospects and opportunities. I noted that the IMF shares the President’s priorities to foster broad-based economic growth, create jobs, and combat corruption.

“We also discussed the priority reforms to overcome the main economic challenges the country faces. I reiterated that the IMF as always stands ready to continue supporting Tanzania’s efforts. I also expressed the IMF’s commitment to maintain a strong relationship underpinned by several years of close cooperation. In the near term, this will include a visit by the IMF staff team to discuss recent developments and prospects and continue the dialogue on the economic reforms that could boost economic growth.

“I thanked President Magufuli and his colleagues for the warm reception they afforded me during my visit.”
