High-Level Conference on the Promotion of Good Governance and Fight Against Corruption

Gaborone, Botswana

June 13-14, 2022

The High-Level Conference on Governance and Corruption will discuss how Africa can reap the benefits of good governance to improve growth opportunities, create jobs, reduce poverty  and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As Africa is beginning to recover from the pandemic, the region’s policymakers have a chance to recover the momentum stalled by the pandemic, by drawing lessons from their experience in managing the COVID-19 crisis to strengthen governance and integrity systems. By doing so, African leaders in the public and private sectors can deepen and broaden the positive momentum on governance and anticorruption reform that many countries in the region had achieved in the decades preceding the pandemic and manage better some of the spillovers on Africa from the war in Ukraine.

The conference will offer a platform for the African Union Commission and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to present their approaches for engaging with member countries on governance; share insights based on their long experience helping member countries address governance and corruption issues -especially through extensive institutional capacity development; and share lessons learnt based on their efforts to help member countries during the COVID-19 pandemic

The specific objectives of the conference include to: (1) help build consensus on the macro-critical impacts of poor governance and corruption; (2) reaffirm African governments’ commitment to prioritize anticorruption and good governance reforms; (3) identify the pillars of a plan of action to promote governance in Africa, including during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic; (4) discuss the AUC strategy and the IMF framework on governance and corruption, and disseminate key IMF and AUC messages on governance and corruption issues; (5) discuss African countries’ capacity development (CD) needs on governance and corruption issues and CD opportunities offered by the IMF and other international organizations.

The video of the concluding session will be posted on Wednesday, June 15, at 2:00 PM CAT.  icon-camera-video
