Seán Nolan has been Deputy Director of the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department of the IMF since 2013; he leads the department’s work on Fund policies in low income countries.
Since joining the IMF in 1992, he was worked in the African, Asia/Pacific, and European Departments and as advisor to the Deputy Managing Director. He served as the IMF’s resident representative in the Philippines (1999-2002) and in South Africa (2006-09) and was Deputy Director of the African Department during 2009-2013.
Before joining the IMF in 1992, he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Boston University and worked for the Harvard Institute for International Development as a resident advisor at the Indonesian Finance Ministry. He holds a doctorate in economics from Yale University and is an Irish national.
